Ran accross something that might interest central Illinois types. If you have school-age kids you might know the official Illinois state soil, but us older folk may not. Here's a pic and description:

Drummer Soil (http://www.inpofos.org/ppiweb/usamw.nsf/$webindex/2B29A336C5DF558386256B90007B0A93)

That dark streak running from the top layer down through the ligher colored clay is the remnant of a crayfish channel! Kind of gives you an idea what parts of the plains once looked like.

I appears that Drummer soil, if you go back far enough, is named after a poor dog that got shot by it's owner after it messed up a hunt!

Poor 'ol Drummer - famous in death (http://www.ilstu.edu/~dlnelso/Geo201/drummer.htm)

I got interested in this because I'm having 45 trees planted on my property within a few weeks, including a grove of 6-8 Black Walnut trees in one corner. Not surprisingly, the soil type under me is Drummer.

End of Lesson.
