I have 1999 s/n1199 and am having problems with charging system. took in to local dealer for big trip checkover and went to bike week in arizona ( scooter shipped there ) Dead battery cost me two days riding.
Question is what should alternator read while riding and running bike. I have checked and clean down to metal the grounding bolt from battery.

Anything over 12 volts is good. Mine would read 12.3 at idle more going down highway.
I had to replace voltage regulator once.
I have since upgraded to the 38 amp alternator and it comes with a larger voltage regulator. Now mine reads over 14 all the time.

Ditto's to Dave's. Also the 99 speedo (clock) draws down the battery unless you had the recall done on the speedo. If your milage has ever gone to -0- after removing the battery you have the old speedo.

Mine reads about 14.3 underway and 13.9 idling. I also had charging and battery problems, and repeated voltage regulator failures until getting the speedo and alternator upgrades. That fixed all the quirkyness and my voltage regulator hasn't gone bad since.

Are the upgrades some of you suggested a dealer item or a factory direct item or aftermarket?
The Chicago dealer, 3 stores, does not have my confidence so are there any suggestion to take for the upgrade or can I handle it myself with the parts? Should the dealer have suggested the upgrades to the alternator? I think the original dealer in orland park put an regulator on once already.
The dealer in Meza, Az. who helped me out there during bike week said the stator was putting out over 40 volts which they thought meant it was OK. But they did not have the time to check further due to obligations and rides durining the week.
Thanks for the help.

Douglas-Frye did mine. I know they have done Daffy's, Sidecar's and other's in the NIVR. I think you need some special tools to do the job. It doesn't look like it would be that difficult if you had the proper tools.
Give D-F a call, (ask for Rich) see if he can get it taken care of.
